Standards & Guidelines

Provincial renal program guidelines are endorsed by the Ministry of Health. Also, see other BCPRA guidelines.

BCPRA, in cooperation with the health authority renal programs, coordinates service for patients with chronic kidney disease in 13 hospitals and 27 community dialysis units across BC.

Programs provided through BC’s regional health authorities:
  • Chronic kidney disease clinics (for patients who have kidney disease but do not require dialysis)
  • In-hospital hemodialysis
  • Community unit hemodialysis
  • Independent dialysis: peritoneal dialysis, home-based hemodialysis options and self care within facilities

Health authorities and institutions follow provincial renal program guidelines in the development and management of programs.

For details on services in your area, see Kidney Services by Region.

For travellers and visitors who wish to dialyze in BC, see BC Dialysis Centres Accepting Visitors.

BCPRA also leads a variety of provincial initiatives aimed at improving the continuum of care, from early diagnosis to dialysis options and end-of-life issues.
