Education & Development

A key component of the BC Renal (BCR) mandate is to support knowledge-development through research and teaching, as well as succession planning within the broader renal network.
CKD Online Education
Over the course of 2020, BC Renal will host a series of one-hour CKD Education: Online CME for Primary Care.

2020 Sessions:

Session Topic: CKD management in the primary care setting

Speaker: Dr. Aiza Waheed - Nephrologist and Clinical Fellow in CKD and Hemodialysis care

Learning Objectives: 

  1. To define CKD and help prognosticate CKD progression
  2. To describe the pathophysiology and natural history of CKD
  3. To review the approach to general management of CKD patients in primary care
  4. To discuss the management of comorbidities in CKD
  5. To review medication management in CKD including advanced CKD
Session Topic: Approach to Microscopic Hematuria
Speaker: Peter Birks

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Definition of microscopic hematuria
  2. Types of urine testing and urinalysis
  3. Approach to microscopic hematuria
  4. Diagnostic and workup algorithm
  5. Referral criteria for Urology and Nephrology
  6. Discussion of common renal causes of hematuria


All sessions listed above will be facilitated by Dr. Claire Harris, New Nephrologist at VGH, speakers will be posted as confirmed.

We have changed platforms to use Zoom webinars. Zoom offers the option to use the program with downloading for those who have download restrictions. 

Accreditation Note: You must be online for a minimum of 50% of the session to receive the credits.  This e-learning module is available for credit/certificate of completion only within British Columbia.

Province Wide Rounds
UBC Division of Nephrology Province-Wide Rounds are held throughout the year on a variety of renal care topics. Rounds are hosted at St. Paul's Hospital or Vancouver General Hospital and video conferenced to ten sites around the province. 

Local and invited speakers present to an audience that includes staff nephrologists, fellows, residents, visiting medical students, renal nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals.
