As a youth growing up in East Vancouver, Dr. Mike Bevilacqua wasn't one of those kids who dreams about what they want to be as an adult. He knew he was interested in science and was content to follow where that might lead.

As a pre-teen he took up judo, and spent 15 years practicing and competing in it. He says judo helped shape him through his early years, and credits the sport for promoting a sense of self-discipline and respect for others.

Mike followed his interest in science at Simon Fraser University, taking a Bachelor's degree in kinesiology. At SFU he discovered an interest in physiology and took the next step with medical training at the University of Calgary. On his return to Vancouver he took speciality training in nephrology at UBC.

He says he was drawn to nephrology by its complexity. "I like how it combines specialized care with general medicine."  He also appreciates the longer-term relationships with patients that come with nephrology.

In 2017 Mike completed a BC Renal administrative fellowship and has since continued to work with BC Renal, in addition to his clinical work as a nephrologist in Fraser Health. In December he became chair of the provincial Kidney Care Committee.

He enjoys the difference between his clinical and administrative responsibilities. As a clinician, says Mike, you provide care for one patient at a time. But as an administrator, you can make a positive difference for thousands of patients by improving delivery of care across the province.

Mike is married and has two young daughters, aged six and four. His eldest daughter is involved in judo, although Mike insists he had no influence on that decision.
